Description of Work Unit

The Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences (ERHS) houses academic, research and clinical programs that address the promotion of human and animal health. The mission of the department is to deliver excellent education in environmental and radiological health to prepare students to contribute to society; to conduct state of the art research in human and animal health focusing on environmental exposures and clinical applications; and to promote excellence in outreach and service to the citizens of Colorado, the United States, and globally through information transfer, research, continuing education and technical assistance. ERHS is unique in its multifactorial approach to disease that involves chemical, physical, and biological factors. ERHS provides undergraduate and graduate programs leading to BS, MS and PhD degrees.

Position Summary

The postdoctoral fellow would join a multidisciplinary team (epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, and human development) to understand the role of multiple chemical, physical and social factors on adverse health outcomes in infancy and early childhood. This study, funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, under the “Using a Total Environment Framework to Assess Life-long Health Effects of Chemical Exposures” RFA, seeks to implement novel statistical approaches to address multiple environmental exposures in a linked, longitudinal administrative cohort of approximately 17,000 children in the urban areas of Southeast Wisconsin. The postdoctoral fellow will be primarily responsible for data analyses that integrate household-level and community-level primary and secondary data on air pollution, housing stock, lead exposure and social environment to address respiratory, neurocognitive and injury outcomes. Specific research activities will include database development, data analyses, and dissemination of research findings to project partners, development of peer-reviewed manuscripts, and presentation of findings at professional meetings. Postdoctoral fellow on the project are also encouraged and mentored to develop new proposals and research initiatives to support complementary research endeavors.

This is a two-year appointment with the option to continue for a third year based on performance.

Required Job Qualifications

Doctoral degree in epidemiology, biostatistics or statistics with strong interest in environmental health

Application and development of methods for multiple environmental exposures

Excellent R programming skills and database management skills.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Experience with and interest in analyses using individual, household or community-based physical or environmental exposures (e.g. air pollution, built environment, poverty) and spatial statistics.

Excellent organizational and time management skills;

The ability to work independently and within collaborative, multidisciplinary teams.

Programming experience in or desire to learn Python.

Duty/Responsibility

Carry out tasks related to the conduct of the research study, primarily statistical analysis of project data. Responsible for the development and creation of epidemiologic models that incorporate physical, chemical, and social environmental exposures on three primary health outcomes for analysis: respiratory, neurocognitive, and injury. Health data that will need to be managed will come from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (Medicaid Records, Women, Infants And Children (WIC) program, and Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP). Exposure data will be collected by the postdoctoral fellow from publicly available sources (e.g. US Census) and from research products from other group members (e.g. air pollution models, built environment data). Analyses will require the following: proficiency with statistical software packages and creation and execution of code to conduct analyses for single and multiple pollutant exposures.
