Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

The field technician position, located in Avon Park, Florida, will be tasked with a variety of tasks supporting the efforts of the Natural Resources Program by providing support to the Invasive Species Coordinator with their work. Duties may include conducting field surveys, data collection, monitoring, habitat improvement, basic inventory and treatment of invasive flora. This position will be required to conduct pesticide application, mechanical control, use GPS to collect field data, and other tasks as assigned. This position requires the field technician to have or be able to obtain a Florida Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services Commercial Pesticide Applicators License within 3 months of hire. There may be an opportunity to assist with other Natural Resources staff; for example: wildlife monitoring, rare plant monitoring, archeological surveys, etc.
Required Job Qualifications
• A BA/BS degree with courses in field biology, field ecology, wildlife biology, or related areas or demonstrated experience specific to the position as described below. • Knowledge of exotic invasive plants in Florida and/or the southeast region. • A successful candidate must have experience chemically, mechanically, and/or biologically treating exotic invasive plant species. • A successful candidate must have experience conducting vegetation surveys and conducting basic inventory of exotic invasive plant species. • A successful candidate must have used handsaws, loppers, hand clippers, operated brush cutters, backpack sprayers, gas-powered spray equipment and be able to operate this and other equipment safely and efficiently. • A successful candidate must be familiar with handheld data collection devices and Microsoft programs. • A successful candidate must be able to walk for long periods of time in inclement weather, strenuous and uncomfortable environmental conditions which can occur in Central Florida. • The successful candidate must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
• A successful candidate should be able to maintain inventory of equipment and herbicides. • At least 1 year of experience in the natural resources field. • A pesticide applicators license is beneficial • A successful candidate should have experience with data management including collecting, assessing and editing data. • A successful candidate should be able to work equally well on an independent basis or as part of a team, be flexible and be able to follow detailed instructions in a structured organization. • Experience with ArcGIS, GIS, using maps is beneficial • Experience working with the military or similar organization meeting a variety of individual and program needs supporting training and education. • The successful candidate should be a self-starter and have the ability to take initiative, work independently and as part of a team, and produce results.

Conduct invasive weed control through pesticide application, biological control and mechanical control. Working independently or with minimal supervision conduct pre-determined weed control strategies developed with the Invasive Species Manager. Use critical thinking, deductive reasoning to perform adaptive management strategies for exotic invasive species decision making in the field.
