The City and County of Broomfield became Colorado’s 64th county in November of 2001. As a community, Broomfield has as a strong sense of unity, pride and identity. It places a high priority on enhancing and preserving the quality of life for all residents and is assessing several potential projects where Extension may be a partner including new community gardens. The community is planned with a balance of residential and commercial land use, with generous open space, parks and natural areas. The 37 square mile county transitions from semi-agricultural uses in the north to a mix of residential, industrial, commercial and open space in the southern part of the county. This person provides both overall office leadership and horticultural programming for CSU Extension in the City and County of Broomfield. The individual represents both Broomfield and Colorado State University throughout the community and works to bring visibility to Extension’s programs and impacts. Using exceptional communication skills, this individual will build high functioning relationships and engage communities throughout Broomfield in programming and projects that align with local interests. In addition, this individual provides leadership for the office (inclusive work environment, budget, staff development and supervision), is the local face of Extension and delivers educational opportunities for both youth and adult audiences. This individual works under the guidance and supervision of the CSU Extension Front Range Region Director.
Required Job Qualifications
• Completed master’s degree. Degree must be completed prior to beginning employment. • One degree must be conferred in horticulture, plant pathology, plant science, or closely related field of study. • Three years professional experience that provides a broad and significant understanding of home, community, commercial and/or green industry horticulture, gardening and landscapes. • Demonstrated skill working with people as individuals and in groups; ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with other professionals and organizations. • Ability and willingness to use personal and group communication skills to connect and successfully collaborate with internal and external partners and bring quality teaching, public speaking/presentation and writing skills to their day-to-day work and engagement. • Demonstrated leadership ability. Evidence of drive and initiative. Must be a self-starter. • Experience promoting, marketing, and/or creating public awareness of programs and services among key community decision-makers and throughout a community. • Prior volunteer program management experience or capacity to manage a volunteer program. • Experience in audience needs identification, program development, and evaluating results of programs. • Demonstrated ability to manage or resolve conflicts, solve problems, and facilitate group interactions and community engagement. • Personal or professional commitment to diversity as demonstrated by persistent effort, active planning, allocation of resources and/or accountability for diversity outcomes. • Demonstrated use of technology and social media in managing and/or delivering educational programs. • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
• Prior supervisory, budget and/or office leadership experience. • Strong Interest or experience providing educational programming for youth through school, after school and partner based opportunities. • Prior Extension experience. • Successful experience developing financial support for educational programs: grant writing, fundraising, contracting, or cost recovery. • Ability to speak Spanish.

Job Duty Category Program Planning, Development, Delivery, Evaluation and Reporting
• Provide programming in response to locally identified needs and interests in home/landscape horticulture for consumers, green industry clients, and Master Gardener basic and continuing education. Work with and through neighboring counties and Extension statewide to provide access to diverse program opportunities (Family and Consumer Sciences, Energy, Urban Agriculture,) for Broomfield residents. • Supervise the horticulture program coordinator; and provide support and guidance to Broomfield County’s Master Gardener program and horticulture programming for adult, youth, inter-generational and green industry audiences. Work with MG Coordinator to select and develop volunteers and to prepare them to accept increased leadership, management, and diverse public education/information roles; enhance the middle management capacity of volunteers to conduct horticulture programming throughout Broomfield. • Promote programming for diverse audiences and assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies including reaching out to underserved and underrepresented audiences. • Cooperate with or facilitate research/demonstration trials and programs in collaboration with CSU faculty. • Actively participate with Extension work teams to help focus and develop regional and statewide programs including basic and advanced horticulture training to Colorado Master Gardener candidates locally and statewide. • Conduct field calls for residential and green industry clients. • Maintain effective communication with Colorado State University personnel, community leaders and other agencies/organizations to enhance strong program development, delivery and evaluation. • Provide leadership for adult and youth volunteer development and engagement through volunteer recruitment, selection, orientation, education, training, motivation, evaluation, recognition and support. • Create awareness of Extension, programs and impacts and CSU’s partnership with Broomfield throughout the community and within local government. • Collaborate with other groups in horticulture, local food, native plant, natural resources and gardening education initiatives and programs. • Work and cooperate with federal, state and county agencies, and non-profit organizations. • Effectively communicate and develop strong working relationships within the office and the City and County of Broomfield, Extension colleagues, city council members, volunteers, partners, advisory committees, CSU Extension administration and staff to continually assess conditions and enhance the effectiveness of local and regional programming Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.

• Provide leadership for the planning and strategic delivery of Extension educational programming that aligns with Broomfield interests. • Prepare and manage office budget including support for cost recovery, resource development and revenue generation. • Inspire, coach, provide developmental opportunities, supervision, performance evaluations and leadership for permanent staff; interns, short term employment and AmeriCorps opportunities as appropriate. • Build and support an environment of teamwork, civility and inclusion throughout the office and the Broomfield Extension Program. • Provide leadership and assistance with other activities as assigned.
