GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is an agency committed to providing a safe, high quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. We now seek a full-time Design Specialist I located in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Responsible for the detailing of structural drawings of bridges and other highway-related structures that enhances public safety and improves the state transportation system.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • With some direction, produce accurate structural details for steel and concrete bridges and other highway related structures.

  • Using computer aided drafting software, create accurate and complete structural details by referencing engineering computations, utilizing engineering theory, reviewing project specific data, and following proper detailing procedures and office standards.

  • Obtain records and information for use in working drawings.

  • Verify and make corrections and additions to structural details.

  • Calculate estimated quantities of materials required for contract bidding, construction, and project costs.

  • Communicating with designers to ensure structural drawings are in compliance with engineering computations.

  • Recommend minor adjustments in design to achieve simplicity and contractibility.

  • Utilizing trigonometry, algebra, and geometry, calculate reinforcing steel lengths and laps, girder piece lengths, cross frame lengths, gusset plate dimensions, etc.

  • Participate in the review of drafting standards.

  • Participate in technician meetings to review detailing standards.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of Bridge Program and industry drafting standards.

  • Knowledge of drafting principals, practices, standards, and office policies that relate to structural detailing

  • Knowledge and understanding of the practical applications of algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.

  • Skill in the use of computer-aided design and drafting software (Microstation and AudoCadd) word processing (Word), and spreadsheet (Excel) computer applications.

  • Ability to produce clean, legible and organized work.

  • Ability to give attention to details and work under pressure.

  • Ability to work well with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering)

PLUS

Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Transportation occupational group) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Design Technician

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Transportation occupational group) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Design Technician
