This position is located in the Facility Management Service (FMS), of the Cheyenne VA Medical Center (CVAMC), Cheyenne, WY. The incumbent is assigned to the Grounds Maintenance section of FMS and performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance of the CVAMC hospital grounds under the general supervision and direction of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Removes snow and ice from roads and sidewalk utilizing snow and ice removal equipment such as shovels, small hand blowers, ride on mowers with snow blades and larger plows on a crew rig.
- Mows turf with push and ride on mowers; edges pavement and shrub beds with gasoline edger's or string line trimmers; prunes and trims trees, shrubs and hedges with electric hedge shears, hand saws, chain saws, pruning shears, shovels and other hand tools.
- Digs trenches; assists in sprinkler system operation and maintenance.
- Hauls debris, rakes, picks up trash and cleans storm drains.
- Helps clean and patch roads, erect signs and participates in preparing for special events.
- Performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Loads and unloads supplies and equipment from trucks utilizing weight-handling devices such as electric hand trucks or lifts, pallet jacks, and dollies to move very heavy loads.
- Operates small tractors, forklifts, and other equipment of various sizes to dig ditches and trenches, repair asphalt and concrete roads, mow grass and trim bushes and trees and unload/load trucks.
- Assists craftsmen with demolition of ceilings, walls and floors.
- Assists craftsmen with the installation of suspended ceilings, floor tiles, paneling and placing of concrete where required.
- Assists craftsmen in the repair of broken water lines, etc., along with other members of the unit.
- Performs heavy moving tasks when relocation of offices or equipment is required.
- Assists other shops.
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position as needed to associated clinics.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: * Perform safe handling, special attention and operation of all equipment and tools, all attachments associated with the equipment and tools. * Skills in operating, controlling, cleaning and performing routine operator maintenance on various equipment and tools, to include making adjustments to equipment. * Safely operate weight handling devices, equipment and tools. * Assists in the upkeep of building, grounds, related structures and utilities.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements:Physical exertion is considerable and includes prolonged standing, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding; working in cramped and awkward positions; reaching, lifting, and bending when using hand and power tools and operating mowers on grades/slopes. Incumbent frequently lifts weight in excess of 50 pounds (i.e. bulk winter salt, bulk water softener, equipment, office furniture). Assistance is usually available for handling heavier materials and equipment. Heavy exertion is required at frequent intervals.
Working Conditions:Incumbent works indoors and outdoors: may be exposed to adverse weather conditions when working outdoors. Incumbent may be exposed to drafts, noise, dust, and dirt. Possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. Incumbent is required to follow safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, and safety glasses and exercise proper handling of equipment to avoid serious injury. Incumbent must have physical capacities for working outside in excessive heat and cold, excessive noise, confined areas, inclement weather and on slippery or uneven surfaces that can be found at or in transit to and from work sites.
Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
